Network Instruments Virtual Monitoring

As people expand the number of applications running in virtual environments, they need to look at visibility whether they can monitor and analyze virtual traffic for ensuring performance or security.

Most companies handle this by placing appliances on the physical network and tracking VM communications when they hit the physical network. This however ignores communications that stay within the virtual host.

If you have multiple VMs within the same virtual host communicating with each other, you’d need to place a software analyzer or probe within the virtual host to monitor the internal communications.

This is a good solution, but it ignores the realities that people want to extend the power of their existing analysis devices into virtual environments. In Network Instrument’s case, people have come to rely on retrospective network analysis in their GigaStor to troubleshoot sporadic problems. GigaStor is like a TiVo for your network capturing terabytes of packets for later playback and analysis. So, rather than being notified of a problem by the user and starting a packet capture, you’re always recording network activities and can simply rewind the network and troubleshoot. Because of the need for hardware, this solution can never be virtualized. So, that’s where the Virtual TAP comes in to complete the virtualized offering. The Virtual TAP copies all communications between VMs on the virtual host and pushes them out to the GigaStor.

So, with this Network Instruments solution you’re able to monitor performance in both virtual and physical environments. You can monitor application and network performance from a single integrated console interface using Observer or enterprise-wide using the Observer Reporting Server. One benefit that we haven’t covered with the Virtual TAP is that you can also push the internal communications out to any other hardware or software product needing access to the virtual environment. Network Instruments is also the first in the performance analysis space to offer this.

Paessler Releases White Paper on “Virtualization And Network Monitoring”

Posted on by admin in PRTG |Paessler |Webserver StressTool

, , , , ,

Server virtualization is the latest major technology trend in data centers. It provides many opportunities but is not entirely risk-free. Network monitoring can help plan the virtualization of a data center while also minimizing risks for already virtualized environments.

Dirk Paessler, CEO of Paessler AG and an expert in network monitoring has quite a bit of experience in virtualizing data centers, seeing as Paessler AG works with virtualized environments itselfs. His whitepaper provides a comprehensive overview about the opportunities and risks of virtualization and the role network monitoring plays in this context. A great help for administrators and IT executives.

You can download a copy of this white paper by going to:

http://www.paessler.com/content/e2030/e1895/e3863/e2572/ServerVirtualization_eng.pdf

Paessler offers two applications that form a complete network monitoring suite for small-to-medium businesses and is used by large and very large enterprises to provide more detailed visibility into critical
parts of their networks.

Paessler has re-architected all its tools recently, putting them on the optimal technological base and improving their overall functionality, efficiency and usability.

Its tool suite consists of:

PRTG Network Monitor is an easy-to-use Windows application for monitoring and classifying bandwidth usage and for monitoring network uptime/downtime.  It provides live readings and long-term usage trends for network devices. PRTG makes early detection of network and website problems easy and affordable. It helps organizations monitor critical network resources and detect systems failures or performance problems immediately, minimizing downtime and its economic impact. SNMP Helper enables PRTG Network Monitor to collect detailed performance information on Windows servers and workstations.  Up to several thousand parameters and performance counters on a PC can be monitored with just a few mouse clicks.

Webserver Stress Tool is a powerful HTTP-client/server test application designed to pinpoint critical performance issues on a Web site or Web server that may obstruct delivery of an optimal user experience. By simulating simultaneous access by hundreds or thousands of simultaneous users, it tests Web server performance under normal and extreme loads to ensure that critical information and service are available at response times that users expect. All of these tools come in various editions, and include a free edition to allow users to try out their main features before making the purchase decision.

The Browser War is Back: Choosing the Best Web Browser for PRTG Network Monitor

Those of you who use Paessler’s PRTG might be interested in this article as it discusses (due to the introduction of Google’s new Chrome web browser) which web browser works the best with PRTG.

The Browser War is Back: Choosing the Best Web Browser for PRTG Network Monitor

Since Google have launched their new browser “Chrome” a few days ago development in the world of Web browsers is becoming quite interesting. The new contender Chrome has already created a lot of buzz and includes a number of innovative features that will raise the innovation pressure for the other players.

We wanted to know which one of the four most used browsers is the best for accessing PRTG Network Monitor’s web interface which offers an ajaxified web interface experience.

Just last week we had added experimental support for the WebKit rendering engine (used by Safari and Chrome) to the latest beta of PRTG 7.0.9. So we could start right away testing Chrome against IE7, Safari 3.1 and Firefox 3.

The results in short:

  • Don’t use IE7 with PRTG Network Monitor (or other websites with heavy Ajax/Javacript usage), it is simply the slowest browser by far
  • You can’t go wrong using Firefox 3, it has the best overall experience
  • Safari seems to provide the fastest Javascript processing
  • No other browser manipulates DOM objects in the browser window as fast as Chrome

The plain numbers only tell about a speed difference of factor 4 between the fastest and the slowest browsers. From a subjective perspective (meaning: sitting in front of it and using PRTG’s interface) the difference feels more like factor 10 to 20 between Chrome and IE7.

Conclusion:

Because the support for WebKit (Safari/Chrome) is still experimental in PRTG the best choice right now is Firefox 3.

The future seems to look bright for web based application users as faster browsers are coming up. Chrome has raised the bar for the others. Mozilla has already announced a new and improved Javascript engine for the next version of Firefox. Safari 4 is also expected to include a new Javascript engine.

Note: We did not perform any speed tests with IE8 beta 2 yet, although support for IE8 has also been built into V7.0.9 of PRTG Network monitor as of last week. IE8 is expected to be on-par with Firefox 3, but the others are already going the next step…

Details:

Here are the detailed results of our runtime tests with various Javascript functions of the PRTG Network Monitor 7 web interface:

Test 1: Installing various DOM events on the “group.htm” page:

  • Safari 3.1: 130 ms
  • Chrome: 170ms
  • Firefox 3 (with Firebug): 550ms
  • Firefox 3 (without Firebug): 170ms
  • IE7: 500ms

Test 2: “Tab switching” on the “group.htm” page (tabbing from from the sensor tree view to the “edit root group” page):

  •  Safari 3.1: 90 ms
  • Chrome: 70ms
  • Firefox 3 (without Firebug): 110ms
  • IE7: 430ms

Tests were performed on a DELL Precision 390 (Intel Core 2 CPU X6800, 2.93 GHz, 4 GB RAM), all four browsers and the PRTG Core Server ran on the same system.
